Do you think Van Morrison is a good singer?
I really don't like his singing... Sometimes it sounds like he's shouting.. Sometimes it has no feeling.
For instance, "Moondance" there's no romantic feeling.. God sakes, it is suppose to sounds romantic, gentle... Full of mushy feeling. I hear harshness, tone of voice awful.
What do you Think About his singing?
I don't think he is a great singer. But he is unique & has a lot of energy.
Variety is the spice of life.

Navigating Van Morrison's extensive catalog since 1993 is a formidable task even diehard fans might not want to attempt. The Irish icon has flirted with blues, jazz, country, pop, Celtic, and his own style of indescribable into-the-mystic spiritually-oriented poetic folk on his numerous releases, making for quite a thorny culling assignment... |

Nor should it be assumed that this a collection of great songs that he`s written in that decade and a half, since this is chock-full of covers, including revivals of songs he recorded in his career. Furthermore, a full 14 songs -- the length of the first disc of this comp -- are credited as collaborations, including some previously unreleased cuts that can be counted among a handful of rarities here. It`s idiosyncratic, which perhaps could be expected from any comp assembled by the artist himself, but it`s also accurate, and it helps makes sense of a rather odd stretch of album-making in a way that`s necessary. Taken one at a time, Van`s excursions into jazz, country, even skiffle seemed odd, but condensed into this 31-track set, it not only makes sense, it makes an argument that Van has been more true -- if not necessarily vital -- than many of his peers in his latter days. Essential Van Morrison $12.98 Purple Pyramid's Essential Van Morrison is comprised of the (much compiled) recordings Morrison made for Bang Records after his split from Them. Morrison's wild-eyed lyricism can be an odd fit with Brill Building vet producer Bert Berns' straight-ahead commercial sound (see the silly but fun "Chick-A-Boom" for an example). Still, a number of great songs can be found here, including the all-time great "Brown Eyed Girl," "The Back Room," "He Ain't Give You None," and "Ro Ro Rosey." Early versions of tracks from Astral Weeks, "Madame George" and "T.B. Sheets," also appear. Despite Morrison's objections to aspects of the pop style, the resultant tension makes for some very interesting and invigorating listening. These sessions aren't vital to the casual Morrison fan, but anyone whose love of the man goes beyond the hits needs to add them to his or her collection. The best place to go is Legacy's Bang Masters, as it is a legitimate and well-mastered set that includes all the songs from the sessions. For some reason, this collection only has 12 of the 18, and to make matters worse has two horrifying dance mixes tacked on: a drum'n'bass mix of "Brown Eyed Girl" and a dubby version of "Spanish Rose." Please avoid hearing these. ~ Tim Sendra, All Music Guide |

Van Morrison - Playlist: The Very Best of Van Morrison (The Bang Years) [Digipak] $7.99 Playlist: The Very Best of Van Morrison features 14 tracks defined on the back jacket as "the life-changing songs, the out-of-print tracks, the hits, the fan favorites everyone loves, and the songs that make the artists who they are." Listeners looking for a semi-comprehensive selection of the highly prolific Irish singer/songwriter`s music will find this collection of tracks from his 1967 solo debut Blowin` Your Mind! and 1968 follow-up Astral Weeks enjoyable, although both records (Astral Weeks in particular is a classic) are great on their own. ~ James Christopher Monger Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. Van Morrison - Super Hits $5.43 Anyone who`s followed Van Morrison`s career knows that Sony has the rights to the recordings he made for Bang -- in other words, one album plus outtakes. Since part of the reason the Super Hits series is such a success for the label is that they stick to what`s in the vaults -- it cuts their costs considerably to rely on what they already own -- Sony`s options are pretty limited here. So, it isn`t much of a surprise that what they come up with is essentially Morrison`s debut Blowin` Your Mind! minus two songs (the notorious "T.B. Sheets" and "Who Drove the Red Sports Car"), plus a selection of four highlights from the session outtakes ("The Back Room," "It`s All Right," "Chick-A-Boom," "Madame George"). In other words, there are no hits here outside of "Brown Eyed Girl." Granted, that`s his biggest hit, but casual listeners who buy a collection called Super Hits will likely expect a little more than one hit. However, this particular Super Hits contains nothing but Bang material. Although this is very good music, it`s largely of interest to collectors who will prefer to own either the official debut or the exhaustive single-disc compilation Bang Masters. Casual fans would be better off with Mercury`s The Best of Van Morrison. It may cost a bit more, but it has more of what they`re looking for. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005.
