It was good news for both Garth and country music because it meant that the genre was expanding to a pop audience. Yet this also made many traditionalists nervous: "he`s going `pop`," they cried.The album opens with the bluegrassy "Against The Grain," with its nothing-ventured-nothing-gained theme. It is followed by the cowboy blues "Rodeo," which features another topic close to the hearts of country music fans, and "What She`s Doing Now," a powerful ballad immersed in steel guitar. Halfway through ROPIN` THE WIND and there`s not even a trace of "pop music." In fact, Garth could even be mistaken for Randy Travis on "Cold Shoulder." "In Lonesome Dove" is a beautiful Western narrative, while "Papa Loves Mama" talks of truckers, diesels, wine bottles, the penitentiary, and the graveyard; when`s the last time you heard a song like that on a Michael Bolton album?Yes, Garth is all country on ROPIN` THE WIND--even though he fervently covers "Shameless," a song written by his idol Billy Joel. Ropin' the Wind $9 Bronco Bob thinks he's found a home in Moonlight Valley, but there's trouble on the Box Double Bar Flying Diamond W Ranch. Cattle rustling leads to an ambush. Kidnapping is mixed with blackmail. And right in the middle of it all is Bronco Bob, who's not only the best bronc rider in the territory but also an amateur magician who uses tricks instead of a gun to take care of trouble when it comes his way. With the help of his cowgal pal, Loretta, Bronco Bob is determined to unravel the mystery without getting anybody hurt. Unfortunately, the bad guy has a different plan--Bob is a problem to be removed. But this proves to be harder than anticipated. Perhaps the hired gunslinger, Wild Willy, put it best when he said, Tryin' to catch Bronco Bob is like ropin' the wind. You think you got 'em, but when you pull the noose tight, there's nobody there. Action and humor fill this western adventure. |
