Funk $12.63 Funk hasn't received the critical attention that rock, jazz, and the blues have - until now. Colorful, intelligent, and in-your-face, Rickey Vincent's Funk celebrates the songs, the musicians, the philosophy, and the meaning of funk. The book spans from the early work of James Brown (the Godfather of Funk) through today, covering funky soul (Stevie Wonder, the Temptations), so-called black rock (Jimi Hendrix, Sly and the Family Stone, the Isley Brothers), jazz-funk (Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock), monster funk (Parliament, Funkadelic, Bootsy's Rubber Band), naked funk (Rick James, Gap Band), disco-funk (Chic, K.C. and the Sunshine Band), funky pop (Kool & the Gang, Chaka Khan), P-Funk Hip Hop (Digital Underground, De La Soul), funk-sampling rap (Ice Cube, Dr. Dre), funk rock (Red Hot Chili Peppers, Primus), and more. Funk tells a vital, vibrant history - the history of a uniquely American music born out of tradition and community, filled with energy, attitude, anger, hope and an irrepressible spirit. |

Funk Explosion $13.58 Similar in set-up and scope to Pure Funk, just as Disco Love Collection -- released at the same time by the same label -- appeared to be patterned after Pure Disco, Funk Explosion includes 14 tracks, the majority of which have appeared on several other compilations. As with Disco Love Collection, this is a half-hearted introduction to funk, and it might be useful for those who need at least a handful of these songs and don't mind potential (nearly unavoidable, actually) overlap with other various-artist discs. Featured: Kool & the Gang's "Jungle Boogie," the Gap Band's "You Dropped a Bomb on Me," Rufus' "Tell Me Something Good," and the O'Jays' "For the Love of Money." ~ Andy Kellman, All Music Guide |

Pure Funk $15.26 Since Pure Disco was a success, Mercury decided to assemble a sequel, Pure Funk. Like its predecessor, Pure Funk is a terrific 20-track collection of funk classics, from Rick James"Super Freak" to Parliament's "Flashlight." A couple of songs are marginally funk -- it's hard to call the kitsch-fest "Kung Fu Fighting" or Earth, Wind & Fire's sultry ballad "Shining Star" funk -- but that doesn't mean that Pure Funk isn't a terrifically enjoyable collection. With songs like "Brick House," "Pick Up the Pieces," "Good Times," "Jungle Boogie," "Fire," "Tell Me Something Good," "Lady Marmalade," "Superfly," "Mr. Big Stuff" and "Word Up," Pure Funk delivers nothing but funky good times, and it's damn near irresistible. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide |

Disco Nights, Vol. 2: The Best of Disco Funk $5.88 Featuring a dozen of the best bubblegum hits from the late '70s, this compilation makes for nice lightweight listening. Some songs, such as Parliament's dancefloor classic "Flashlight," still sound as good now as they did the first time around. Others, such as "Shake Your Groove Thing" by Peaches & Herb, make perfect background noise at keg parties and wedding receptions. Ultra-smooth soul kings Marvin Gaye and Isaac Hayes each contribute a track. Then there are a handful of contributions from one-hit wonders and the "where are they now" crowd. Though not every song on this album is exactly a musical masterpiece, as a whole, it's got plenty of retro appeal and nostalgic value. ~ L. Katz, All Music Guide |

Bahler (synthesizer); Scotty Miller (drums); Charles Williams (congas); Ike Perkins (background vocals).Recording information: Alpha International Recording Studios, Philadelphia, PA; Philadelphia and Alpha International Recording Studios; Philadelphia Music Works, Philadelphia, PA; Sigma Sound Studios; Sigma Sound Studios, Philadelphia, PA.Unknown Contributor Role: Carmichael.Instant Funk, the nine-piece funk unit discovered by Bunny Sigler, created a stir in 1979 when Salsoul released the single "I Got My Mind Made Up (You Can Get It Girl)." Swirling, screaming horns announce the chorus; hand claps, tambourines and a maniacal rhythm guitar battle the heavy bottom; and a woman delivers erotic lines for added impact. Salsoul followed the number 20 pop and number one R&B (for three weeks) hit with "Crying," a race horse whose relentless beat only subsides near the fade; Carmichael`s vocal is passionate, almost deranged. "Never Let Me Go Away," a rare Instant Funk ballad, was so overblown the melody got buried. Spooky voices and haunted-house sounds wallpaper "Dark Vader"`s comic-book lyrics and funky hooks. Rolling horns pump "I`ll Be Doggone" (not the Marvin Gaye hit), a cooker that rolls for seven minutes. Four of the eight tracks are killers; a pretty good average for a disco/funk group. ~ Andrew Hamilton Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. All rights reserved. |

Play That Funk $7.98 Play That Funk, released in 2005 by Collectables as part of the Priceless Collection series, contains four of Wild Cherry's five chart hits -- one of which has remained popular 30 years on, while the others aren't particularly memorable. (Unless you count "Baby Don't You Know," since it's so similar to its superior predecessor, "Play That Funky Music.") This is more than enough Wild Cherry than most need to own. If your only goal is to obtain "Play That Funky Music," you'd be much better off with any various-artists disco compilation containing it. If it weren't for "Play That Funky Music," it's quite possible that no label would be motivated enough to release a Wild Cherry compilation. (Note: the track listing for this disc is identical to Sony's Play the Funk. The packaging, and obviously the title, are both very similar as well.) ~ Andy Kellman, All Music Guide |

Disco Not Disco 3 $17.98 Given new life through an arrangement with !K7, the Strut label -- the source of so many wonderful compilations covering many neglected points within the spectrum of dance music across several decades -- resumes with its third Disco Not Disco compilation, compiled by "Last Night a DJ Saved My Life" author Bill Brewster (who provides typically sharp and fact-packed notes) and Strut founder Quinton Scott. When the first two volumes were released in 2000 and 2002, many listeners susceptible to strange rhythmic sounds had yet to be introduced to Arthur Russell or Material, and it's safe to say that those who never set foot inside places like the Paradise Garage or the Loft would have ever thought to give a 16-minute cut off a 1981 Steve Miller Band album any kind of attention. Since then, compilations covering roughly the same territory -- or one or two specific subgenres dusted off by these discs -- have become common enough to make some Disco Not Disco disciples a little cynical about a third volume. Most of the tracks on this volume are indeed readily available on an assortment of compilations released within the last ten years: Nine O'Clock Drop, Anti NY, the Mutant Disco reissues, Rough Trade Shops: Post Punk and a few recent single-artist reissues, just to cite a few. Even so, we're not talking about the umpteenth big-disco-hit comp; "Contort Yourself" has a long way to go before it becomes one-tenth as comped as "I Will Survive." (And it's not like all the tracks from the first two Disco Not Discos had ever been wiped out of existence, either.) Easily the most post-punk volume of the series, there's Vivien Goldman (with the relatively scarce "Launderette"), Delta 5, Shriekback, Konk, and Maximum Joy. They mix it up with another assortment of obscurities from unexpected corners. The biggest, deepest surprises are "Crunch Cake" (thick, tightly wrapped fusion-funk from Isotope), "Binary" (a frosty 1985 B-side from France's Kazino), and "Seoul Music" (one of the series' most distinctive tracks, from Yellow Magic Orchestra, a spell weaved by spiraling percussion and serpentine bass). Even considering the timing and context, the disc is every bit as replayable as the second volume. The only truly bad move here is the inclusion of the instrumental mix of A Number of Names' proto-techno "Sharevari," which is like favoring an instrumental of Laid Back's "White Horse" over the vocal version. (Then again, the instrumental does leave room for you to perfect your impersonation of a black Detroiter approximating a posh Frenchman speaking English.) Important note: Gina X Performance's "Kaddish" is not on the disc, even though it is listed. "Seoul Music" is in its place -- in the end, a good thing. Bizarrely, the advance copies did list the YMO track and included it, and there was no Gina X presence whatsoever. ~ Andy Kellman, RoviPerformers: Zoe |

Licence to Funk $15.98 Licence to Funk is the eighth album by the Nils Landgren Funk Unit, and again, the Swedish trombonist reconfigures the band's personnel to keep things fresh. He keeps the rhythm section of German drummer Wolfgang Haffner and bassist Magnum Coltrane Price and adds reedman Magnus Lindgren, keyboardist and vocalist Ida Sand, and -- the biggest surprise here -- Detroit guitarist Ray Parker, Jr., author of the hit single "Ghostbusters," who had retired from music in the early '90s and then reappeared on Landgren's collaboration with pianist Joe Sample, Creole Love Call, in 2005. After the previous record's experimentation with ABBA tunes (Funky ABBA), Licence to Funk is basically an homage to various types of old-school '70s funk: the dry, hard-edged funk of James Brown's famous rhythm section is celebrated in an energetic cover of Fred Wesley's "House Party," another cover brings back the bouncy disco-funk of the Ashford & Simpson/Quincy Jones classic "Stuff Like That," and there are several nods toward the smooth soul-funk of the Crusaders -- for example, Landgren's own composition "24Hours," with its soft electric piano, relaxed background vocals, and sweet flute melody, or his near-instrumental "Capetown Shuffle" (not to mention a cover of Crusaders bassist Wilton Felder's "Brazos River Breakdown"). Despite the three cover tunes and the large number of comparisons the music brings to mind, Licence to Funk is neither a full retro album nor a slavish imitation of all those acts -- the Funk Unit is in top form, with tightly locked grooves and inspired soloing, and the record is an excellent showcase for a band that knows how to use a funk rhythm as a springboard to exciting interplay. While all of the musicians are great (and all, except for Lindgren, contribute original songs), Ray Parker, Jr.'s presence is what gives the group that something extra: listening to his opening guitar licks on "Freak U" and the bluesy "Secret" alone makes you glad he's back. The two songs he's written are among the album's highlights: the gritty, driving rhythm of "SampleRayT" inspires some soulful soloing by saxman Magnus Lindgren, and Parker even sings in his instantly recognizable voice on "For Those Who Like to Party." If the Nils Landgren Funk Unit continue to record albums this good, their title-giving licence will never be revoked. ~ Christian Genzel, RoviPerformers: Wolfgang Haffner - Drums, Vocals; Nils Landgren - Trombone, Vocals; Magnus Lindgren - Vocals, Woodwind; Ray Parker, Jr. - Guitar, Vocals; |

The Funk Anthology $18.98 Shout! Factory's two-disc The Funk Anthology compiles the best of blues icon Johnny "Guitar" Watson's recordings for the DJM label from 1970 to 1981. Also included are three tracks off Watson's 1994 comeback album, Bow Wow. A hugely influential artist, Watson was often overshadowed by his more well-known contemporaries including Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Sly Stone, and George Clinton. While Watson got his start rockin' out in the '50s with such blues crossover classics as "Too Tired," "Hot Little Mama," and the mind-blowingly innovative instrumental "Space Guitar," he made an even bigger mark in the '70s playing his unique and equally innovative brand of funk. Changing from a slick pompadour to a groovy afro and three-piece suits, Watson reimagined himself as a blues pimp extraordinaire and backed up his bravado with musical chops that had already made good on the developments of T-Bone Walker, Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown, and Ray Charles. Referring to himself as the "Original Gangster of Love," Watson's funk recordings found the multi-instrumentalist/vocalist mixing jazz harmonies, blues, soul, raw funk, disco, and R&B all into his own unique style. This is humorous, raunchy, rhythmically compelling, and melodically infectious music that benefits as much from Watson's juicy synthesizer skills as his adept guitar playing. Barring some horn section and drum parts, Watson often played all the instruments on his recordings, and tracks such as "Ain't That a Bitch," "Funk Beyond the Call of Duty," and "It's All About the Dollar Bill" prefigure work by the similarly inclined funk iconoclast Prince. Also notable is his 1980 rap track "Telephone Bill," which certainly stands as one of the earliest recorded examples of the genre. Featuring gatefold packaging that showcases all of Watson's iconic over-the-top album covers, a booklet full of photos, and lovingly written liner notes by music biographer David Ritz, The Funk Anthology is the definitive tribute to a true funk original. ~ Matt Collar, All Music GuidePerformers: Rudy Copeland - Vocals (Background); James Johnson - Vocals (Background); Randie Redman - Vocals (Background); Darcus Thomas - Vocals (Background); Emery Thomas - Bells, Drums, Siren, Tambourine, Vocals (Background), Whistle; Marci Thomas - Vocals (Background); |

Barrio Nuevo: Latin Funk, Latin Rock, Latin Disco, Latin Soul $15.99 Barrio Nuevo is an ambitious collection of Latin fusion. The collection tries to bring the music of Latin neighborhood out of the confines of Spanish Harlem, East L.A., and Little Havana. The emphasis of the collection is the clashing of cultures, which gives artists like War and Patti LaBelle a place despite their lack of Latin roots. Thankfully, the collection sticks to the idea of mutual influence instead of trying to take on the gargantuan task of putting together an overview of Latin funk, rock, disco, and soul as is advertised on its album sleeve. All tracks feed off of the music of black American or traditional Latin music, each taking a piece of the other, depending on what background the musicians were coming from. Soul Jazz is very successful in deciding the boundaries of their collection and following those guidelines very strictly. The tracks are varied, slipping from one end of the spectrum to other without any loss in coherence. They have chosen tracks that may not be as well known but are at least the equals of more popular tracks. This is most evident in the lack of the inclusion of the extremely popular homage to East L.A. car fanatics, "Lowrider." The kitsch hit would seem out of place knowing that one of War's harder funk tracks would be ignored because of it. It is hard to pinpoint the Latin influence in "Me & Baby Brother," but the Meters-style funk is pure and seems to make their disco tracks inexcusable. Chakachas provide two monster lounge tracks that were featured in the film Boogie Nights. "Stories" and "Jungle Fever," despite their simplicity, are the standout tracks on the collection. The group apparently being from French Guyana and slipping into obscurity after having success with these two tracks make them hard to come by. Barrio Nuevo collects party tracks showing how Latin music has influenced and been influenced by black American music. ~ Matt Whalley, All Music Guide |
