Junior Mance Trio - Mance

Junior Mance Trio - Mance

$17.99

Junior Mance Trio: Junior Mance (piano); Keter Betts (bass); Jackie Williams (drums).Additional personnel: Etta Jones (vocals); Lou Donaldson (alto saxophone); Arturo Sandoval (trumpet).Recorded live from November 1-4, 1998. Includes liner notes by Oren Jacoby.Personnel: Junior Mance (piano); Etta Jones (vocals); Lou Donaldson (alto saxophone); Arturo Sandoval (trumpet); Jackie Williams (drums).Audio Remixer: Jon Bates.Recording information: s (11/01/1998-11/??/1998); S Norway, Caribbean Sea (11/01/1998-11/??/1998).Photographer: Rollo Phlecks.Junior Mance`s work was impressively consistent in the `90s. The veteran pianist didn`t do anything groundbreaking, but he excelled by sticking with the hard bop/soul-jazz approach that he had long since perfected. Mance had recently turned 70 when this CD was recorded aboard the SS Norway cruise ship in different parts of the Caribbean Sea in November 1998, and the Chicago native was still very much on top of his game. Mance`s Floating Jazz Festival Trio (which also includes bassist Keter Betts and drummer Jackie Williams) has three distinguished guests on this CD: alto saxophonist Lou Donaldson, trumpeter Arturo Sandoval, and singer Etta Jones (not to be confused with Etta James). The trio becomes a quintet when Donaldson (who had just turned 72) and Sandoval are featured on the Charlie Parker standards "Now`s the Time" and "Confirmation," both of which are appropriate choices because Bird is Donaldson`s primary influence. However, Donaldson is a first-class improviser in his own right; like Phil Woods, Sonny Criss, Sonny Stitt, and Frank Morgan, he realizes that being Bird-minded doesn`t mean that you have to be a Bird clone. Meanwhile, Jones (who died in 2001) has enjoyable spots on "Falling in Love With Love" and "I Got a New Daddy." The rest of the tracks are trio performances, and Mance`s Floating Jazz Festival Trio takes care of business on great but overdone standards like "What Is This Thing Called Love" and "When I Fall in Love." One can complain about the fact that Mance picks so many warhorses, but even so, this CD paints an attractive picture of the pianist at 70. ~ Alex Henderson Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. Junior Mance Trio at the Village Vanguard

Junior Mance Trio at the Village Vanguard

$11.98

Pianist Junior Mance has long been typecast as a soulful blues player so, as if to confuse listeners, he starts off this live set with an uptempo "Looptown" on which he displays technique worthy of Oscar Peterson. Mance's many fans have no reason to despair though for, in addition to a boppish rendition of "Girl of My Dreams," the pianist does perform a generous amount of blues and soulful pieces. Bassist Larry Gales and drummer Ben Riley also help out . ~ Scott Yanow, All Music GuidePerformers: Larry Gales - Bass; Junior Mance - Piano; Ben Riley - Drums

A fine 1986 set with pianist Junior Mance running through romping blues, intricate originals, and moving standards and ballads in a solo set. While he's best at blues-tinged material, Mance shows the versatility necessary to do other material and doesn't substitute clichés and gimmicks for ideas and substance. ~ Ron Wynn, All Music GuidePerformers: Junior Mance - Piano

Personnel: Junior Mance (piano); Bob Cranshaw (bass); Mickey Roker (drums).Personnel: Junior Mance (piano); Mickey Roker (drums).Audio Remasterer: Joe Tarantino.Liner Note Author: Dan Morgenstern.Recording information: New York, NY (02/14/1962); Plaza Sound Studios, New York, NY (02/14/1962).Photographer: Ken Deardoff.Unknown Contributor Roles: Duke Ellington; Jay McShann; Leroy Carr; Meade "Lux" Lewis; Thelonious Monk; Charlie Parker .At age 33 for this one, Mance (piano), with Bob Cranshaw (bass) and Mickey Roker (drums), has all the jazz and blues bases covered, going back to boogie and stride, through swing and bop, with a couple of more modernistic numbers rounding out this complete overview of classic American soul-based black music. Mance evokes wonderfully patient, romantic notions on "Creole Love Call," with creamy, molasses-like melodicism stirred by Roker`s expert brush work. "Yancey Special" has Mance digging in and getting down as Roker shuffles along. "In the Evening" is much more tinkling and upbeat here than Leroy Carr wrote it, whereas the hard-swinging "Jumpin` the Blues" is as much fun to hear as it must have been to play. At his most delicate on Ray Brown`s "Gravy Waltz," Mance starts solo, staggering the melody, while a relaxed "Blue Monk" has Mance tossing in extra notes during the melody, Roker`s intricate brush work personifying cool. Mance also wrote three originals for the date: "Down the Line" is a straight up-and-down 12-bar blues, replete with tinkles and head-nodding chords; "Rainy Mornin` Blues" evokes the falling precipitation`s patterns in soulful tones; while "Cracklin`" is the most urgent swinger, with repeated chorus and gospel flavoring. In his liner notes, Dan Morgenstern depicts this music perfectly as "the basic spirit of jazz," and for the times that rings true. It`s one of many consistently crafted works Mance would make over the years that mixed jazz and blues 50/50. Recommended. ~ Michael G. Nastos Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. 2 LPs on 1 CD: THE FANTASTIC JAZZ HARP OF DOROTHY ASHBY (1965)/JUNIOR MANCE: LIVE AT THE TOP (1969).THE FANTASTIC JAZZ HARP OF DOROTHY ASHBY:Personnel includes: Dorothy Ashby (harp); Jimmy Cleveland (trombone); Richard Davis (bass); Grady Tate (drums); Willie Bobo (percussion).Producers: Ollie McLaughlin, Arif Mardin.Originally released on Atlantic (1447).LIVE AT THE TOP:Personnel: Junior Mance (piano); David Newman (tenor saxophone); Wilbur Little (bass); Rudy Collins (drums).Producer: Joel Dorn.Recorded live at The Village Gate, New York, New York. Originally released on Atlantic (1521).This budget two-fer from the Jazz Collectables label teams up a pair of separate Atlantic recordings from jazz harpist Dorothy Ashby and pianist Junior Mance. On the 1965 release The Fantastic Jazz Harp of Dorothy Ashby, the harpist is joined by bassist Richard Davis, drummer Grady Tate, percussionist Willie Bobo, and a sporadic horn section on four Ashby originals and six standards. The four lengthy tracks that make up Live at the Top were recorded in 1968 featuring Mance at the piano with bassist Wilbur Little, drummer Rudy Collins, and guest David "Fathead" Newman, who plays flute on "That`s All" and tenor sax on his composition "Turning Point." These albums are optional to aficionados but definitely not a good place to start with either of these artists. ~ Al Campbell Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only.
