is it possible to become immune to spicy foods?
i love spicy food a lot-but didnt realize how high my tolerance was till yesterday. i was at a west indian carnival and sampled some jerk chicken and put on some hot sauce n the girl serving me was west indian and said shed never seen anyone put on that much before and that my mouth was gonna explode. it was hot but i didnt blow my mouth off so im wondering if its possible to become immune from spicy food.
i live in west yorkshire in the uk which has a high number of asians and supposedly the strongest curries in the uk and i wonder if my exposure to them has left my tastebuds in a commatose state or if some ppl just have higher tolerance than others??..
haha des you made me laugh at that....legend-il giv it a go when im next smashed............
There are a number of receptors in your taste buds and one of these is sensitive to capsaicin (the chemical in chillies which produce the heat/pain signals we get). Capsaicin produces these heat/pain signals by interacting with neuropeptides; incomplete proteins in the body that perform a number of different functions.
There are three well studied neuropeptides that interact with capsaicin and these are calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP), neurokinin A (NKA), and substance P. Substance P is the primary agent for delivering the heat/pain signal to the brain. These neuropeptides are produced when the capsaicin sensitive nerves (or receptors) are stimulated by the presence of capsaicin. The neuropeptides transmit signals to the brain resulting in a physical reaction - pain is one of these results.
These capsaicin sensitive nerves can only produce neuropeptides at a certain rate. When the nerve is depleted, it is no longer able to send pain messages to the brain. This is one reason why people who eat a lot of chilli are able to stand a lot of heat. It’s essentially a process of acclimatising to capsaicin. The depletion of neuropeptides from the nerve is only temporary, ranging from a few minutes to a few days depending on the amount of capsaicin the nerves have been exposed to. If you want to be able to handle the really hot stuff, you need to regularly consume capsaicin.
The other reason that some people can stand a lot of heat is that each person has a different density (so many per cm2 )of taste buds on their tongue, and tests have shown that people that can stand a lot of chilli heat (and aren’t acclimatized as discussed above) have a very low density of tastebuds, i.e. they have a poor sense of taste compared to people with higher densities.

Live (Hot Curry and Wine) $19.98 Released at a time when the band was pretty much falling to pieces, Live (Hot Curry and Wine) combines tracks from Holocaust's influential debut, The Nightcomers, with a number of new songs and obscure tracks. Most crucially, this set contains possibly the only commercially available version of the band's classic "The Small Hours" (famously covered by Metallica -- and a corker it is too), along with some quality material ("No Nonsense," "Lovin' Feelin' Danger," "Forcedown Breakdown") from their rare Garage Days Revisited EP (yes, Metallica later borrowed that too). Highlights from the aforementioned The Nightcomers LP are also trotted out for good measure, but one has to wonder just how live these recordings really were, since the audience often sounds like ten guys screaming in a room. Quite a collector's item, but despite the band's well publicized influence on a young Metallica, only die-hard New Wave of British Heavy Metal lovers will need to venture here. [Note: the track labeled as "The Nightcomers" on this CD is actually just a five minutes of guitar feedback.] ~ Eduardo Rivadavia, All Music Guide |
