Contemporary string quartets?
I just played the Gershwin lullaby for string quartet - what a lovely piece. Any suggestions of other string quartets to play? We are a good intermediate to advanced group, easily reading Mendelssohn. I already know of the common ones and have played the Andriessen - need new music to play...
Thanks for the suggestions - I can't find Holmboe, Maconchy or the Fratres for String Quartet sheet music to buy. Any ideas?
There are some excellent contemporary quartets. A few that come to mind:
Frank Bridge - 4 quartets
Britten - 3 quartets (quite tricky!)
Elgar - quartet in E minor
Holmboe - 21 quartets (all excellent)
Elizabeth Maconchy - 13 quartets (tough, gritty but rewarding works)
Malipiero - 8 quartets (all single-movement works around 12-15')
Arvo Pärt - Fratres (version for string quartet)
Shostakovich - 15 quartets (best ones: 3, 5, 8, 10, 12,13)
Robert Simpson - 15 quartets (tricky but well worth looking at)
Vaughan Williams - quartet No 2 (need a a good viola player!)

Holmboe is published by Wilhem Hansen in Copenhagen (first link below). They are VERY helpful if you contact them. However any decent music shop should also be able to get this for you. Also www.musicroom.com has quite a bit of Holmboe (second link below). They also have a few of Maconchy's quartets (third link below).
Also have a look through www.sheetmusicplus.com. They have the Arvo Pärt music but also might have other stuff.

Mendelssohn: The Complete String Quartets $50.94 This set of the String Quartets of Mendelssohn may prove to be the most lasting contribution the Emerson Quartet has yet made to the string quartet discography. While the Emerson has always been slightly out of its depth in the quartets of Bartók, Beethoven, and Shostakovich, in the quartets of Mendelssohn, the Emerson has met its match.
