Who designed the cover artwork for The Beatles, Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club?
Who shot the photography for the Album Cover and who designed the final piece?
What was their inspiration?
~The name of the cover is "People We Like". The art director was Robert Fraser. The designers were Sir Peter Blake and his wife (at the time) Jann Haworth. The photographer was Michael Cooper. The actual shoot took about 3 hours, but it took close to three weeks to set it up after the the cutouts were prepped.
The concept was a collaboration between Blake, Haworth and the boys in the band. John, as always, had the most input from the band, including the inclusion of Adolf Hitler in the collage. Hitler's cutout was included, but he is hidden, strictly by coincidence in the final product. The life-size cutout was placed behind the band on one of the bottom tiers and is too short to be seen because of the camera angle. He's more or less between Ringo and Paul, basically surrounded by Johnny Weissmuller, Stephen Crane, Marilyn Monroe, Larry Bell, David Livingston, William Burroughs and Issy Bonn, according to Blake. John also wanted to include Jesus Christ. Because of the controversy caused by John's "we're bigger than Jesus" remark a few months earlier, JC was vetoed and didn't make the final cut. George, Paul and Ringo also chose some of the persons depicted, but Ringo didn't contribute much.
What was the inspiration? What inspires any artist to create any piece of art? However, the cover is consistent with much of Blake's other works, before and after "People We Like". The initial concept was to show the band (Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, not the Beatles) performing in a park. The idea grew and evolved from there. The earliest revisions included adding an audience. From there, the audience became famous persons and celebrities. That lead to inclusion of the Beatle's "heroes", icons and role models. Then John, being John, threw in a touch of controversy (like Hitler and Jesus). They then added friends, such as Bob Dylan and the Shirley Temple tribute to the Rolling Stones. It got crowded, so instead of showing the band performing, it was decided to simply depict the band surrounded by the personages selected. The park motif was preserved, somewhat, by the flowers in the foreground.
Paul had suggested the original cover concept. He wanted an original psychedelic painting by the Dutch art collective "The Fool". Fraser convinced McCartney to abandon that idea because The Fool's work was not all that good and the style was a passing fancy that would date itself quickly. Some of the earliest releases of the album did use the McCartney/The Fool cover. Fraser then brought in Blake and Haworth.
