In defence of "Dinosaur Rock" can I say this. I will stack up 5 classic Rock albums against any 5 albums from
the last decade, that anyone would like to suggest, and we'll see who comes out on top!
My Albums
AC/DC - Powerage
Led Zeppelin - Physical Graffitti
Rolling Stones - Goats Head Soup
Queen - A Night At The Opera
The Clash - London Calling
Bring it on!! LOL
Since 1997?
AC/DC vs. The White Stripes "White Blood Cells" (2001) Jack's riffs (both lyrically and musically) rival both Angus Young and Bon Scott, especially on that album (I'd prefer "Highway to Hell" or "Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap").
Led Zeppelin vs. Sigur Ros "Agaetis Byrjun" (1999) or "( )" (2001) Jonsi expanded on Jimmy Page's use of the bow on a guitar, making it the band's signature sound. I'd compare Orri Dyrason's drum work on ( )'s "Untitled #8" to Bonham's on "Kashmir," and almost prefer it.
Rolling Stones vs. The Strokes "Is This It" (2001) The Strokes have the swagger and strut that the Stones have carried for so many years...each song on their debut album backs up that arrogance.
Queen vs. Radiohead "OK Computer" (1997) Jonny Greenwood brings the noise that Brian May could only dream of, and Thom Yorke might be even more eccentric than his Queen counterpart, Freddie Mercury. The symphonic, time-twisted "Paranoid Android" is RH's answer to "Bohemian Rhapsody."
The Clash vs. Bloc Party "Silent Alarm" (2005) This album was my toughest to find a comparison, as London Calling might still hold up if released as brand new today. The title track, "Rudie Can't Fail," "Lost In the Supermarket," "Guns of Brixton," "Clampdown," and "Train in Vain" all on the same damn record...How Can one find anything even in the same ballpark? I like the Bloc Party record a lot (the singles are all great, and the album flows from track to track), but it's still too recent to know its cultural significance. I'll have to concede one victory to the dinos (although I think OKC is close to this status, and Silent Alarm could still topple A Night at the Opera).
That's my take on it...man, what a great topic! Thanks for the post.

The Rolling Stones - Goats Head Soup [7/6] $51.46 The Rolling Stones: Mick Jagger (vocals, guitar, harmonica, piano); Keith Richards, Mick Taylor (guitar, bass, background vocals); Bill Wyman (bass); Charlie Watts (drums).Additional personnel: Jim Horn (flute, alto saxophone); Bobby Keys (tenor & baritone saxophones); Chuck Finley (trumpet); Ian Stewart, Nicky Hopkins (piano); Billy Preston (keyboards); Pascal, Rebop, Jimmy Miller (percussion).Recorded at Dynamic Sound Studios, Kingston, Jamaica.Following the enormous success of EXILE ON MAIN STREET, GOATS HEAD SOUP found the Rolling Stones jetting down to Jamaica in 1973 and tweaking their rebellious image with a bit of voodoo imagery. Kicking things off with "Dancing With Mr. D.," the Stones picked up the thread of "Sympathy For The Devil" and gilded their already hedonistic reputation with some Satanic allusions. References to Beezelbub aside, SOUP offered up some of the Stones` more heartfelt ballads including "Winter," "Coming Down Again," and the lilting, minor-key classic "Angie."Of course, being known as "The World`s Greatest Rock `n` Roll Band" means a number of songs more than back up this moniker. Among them are "Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo (Heartbreaker)," propelled by Mick Taylor`s wah-wah pedal and Billy Preston`s electric piano, and the twang and slide guitar of "Silver Train." There`s an abundance of cheeky attitude here despite a slew of slow songs, and the Stones close out with a nasty, backhanded tribute to groupies called "Star Star." Though GOAT`S HEAD SOUP does not hold up to the four studio masterpieces that preceded it (BEGGAR`S BANQUET, LET IT BLEED, STICKY FINGERS, and EXILE ON MAIN STREET), it is still full of strong songwriting, great playing, and plenty of classic Stonesy swagger.
